# Introduction

> Vesper adds an editor to your Astro site that reads your content collections and saves to the files in your repository.

Test edit...

Vesper is a content editor for Astro sites. It adds one page to your site, the studio at `/admin`, where people edit your content in plain forms instead of files.

Vesper is in development, and its packages aren't on npm yet. These docs describe how it works in the repository today.

## How it works

**Your schema is the editor.** Vesper reads the content collections in `src/content.config.ts` and builds a form for each one: text, dates, lists, references, images. There is no second schema to write or keep in step.

**Content stays as files.** A save writes to the same Markdown, Markdoc, MDX, JSON or YAML file the site already reads, and changes only what the editor changed. Formatting, comments and key order are kept.

**The site stays static.** The studio is built with your site, as plain files. Nothing runs on a server, so the site works on any host, from Netlify to a shared host you upload to by FTP.

## Three ways to edit

- **Local.** While `astro dev` runs, the studio saves straight to the files on your computer.
- **GitHub.** On the deployed site, editors sign in with their own GitHub accounts, and each publish is a commit to your repository. Free.
- **Cloud.** Editors sign in with an email link instead of a GitHub account, save drafts, and publish after review. Paid.

Everything except the cloud is open source under the MIT license: the studio, local and GitHub editing, accessibility checks and site search.

## Where to start

- [Install](/docs/getting-started/install/) Vesper on an Astro site.
- [Make your first edit](/docs/getting-started/first-edit/) in the studio.
- See how [fields](/docs/content/fields/) in your schema become controls.
